Roar Is Now International

Roar took the first steps towards our goal to be a regional digital media enterprise last year, with the launch of our Bangladeshi site (check out the glowing reviews!), but 2017 is all set to be the year that we truly go international. We already had an exciting start to the year when we quietly launched our brand new Hindi site in India on January 1. The second month of the year, too, got off to a great start when our Bangla team was recognised by that country’s media fraternity, being presented with a prestigious Social Journalism Award.

Back home in Sri Lanka, we have continued to expand our reach, with our network formally changing its brand to Roar Media, and slowly but surely cementing our place as a reliable source of information and content that covers a range of important issues from economics and geopolitics to toddy tapping and… um… UFO sightings?

With our different sections ‒ Roar.lk, Life, Tech, Sinhala, Tamil, and now Hindi and Bangla ‒ the Roar Media network caters to an average of 1.2 million visitors a month. The Tamil site, particularly its video content, has become popular among Tamil-speaking audiences in both Sri Lanka and South India. Last we checked, Roar Tamil videos were getting roughly 300,000 views a month.

Another big announcement this year is going to be the launch of our quarterly magazine. (Yes. Print). Some of our more popular and insightful pieces will make their way to this glossy magazine, adorned with some of our best photography as well as typography, that you will [hopefully, if everything goes according to plan] soon find on a coffee table near you. A hundred pages in total, the Roar Magazine will be distributed among a number of restaurants, coffee shops and department stores in and around Colombo, and the island. If you fancy a copy, you can subscribe via our Facebook page and we’ll have it delivered straight to your doorstep.

In terms of content, our output has increased along with the quality of the information that we dispense, with a bunch of fresh recruits bringing in more colour and diversity to our articles and videos. A few tweaks in the design has made our interface cleaner and more standardised across our different sites. Roar Life, in particular, has become more popular over the past few months, thanks largely to contributions from both staff and freelance writers submitting well-written, well-researched colour pieces on topics that rarely get discussed in our media landscape. Roar Sinhala, too, is becoming more mainstream than ever, with readers gradually adapting it as a go-to source for in-depth news features. Roar Tech, now powered by Dialog Axiata, continues to be the best platform for the latest tech updates, exhaustive reviews and detailed start up coverage in Sri Lanka. Our video team, meanwhile, has mastered the social-media-friendly newscasting, with snippets of brief but crucial information presented in video form to our busy but discerning viewers ‒ all the while working to improve original and documentary-style productions.

Roar Media is now spread out across seven platforms.

Overall, 2017 has been kind to us so far (touch wood) and we’re excited to bring you even more improved features as the months go by and provide you with the kind of solid content that you’ll be hardpressed to find anywhere else. But none of this would’ve been possible if it weren’t for your continued support as our faithful readers, so we would like to take this moment to thank you for staying with us these past two years and supporting us with your likes, shares, and comments.
